What Is Lupus?

It is one among several automimmune diseases caused by the attack of immune system on the healthy body cells and inflammation is the most evident symptom of the disease. The symptoms in different people will have varying severities and they usually begin in the early years of adulthood.

It is quite easy for the symptoms of lupus to be dismissed because the period of flare-ups are usually followed by remission and most often, the symptoms resemble the symptoms of other disease conditions.

Early Signs of Lupus You Should Not Ignore

Fatigue

Fatigue is common if you had a tiring day and the work took a toll on your bodies, but feeling tired for no reason raises a red flag. About 90% of the people with lupus have reported experiencing fatigue even when they were sitting idle at home for the whole day.

Unexplained Fever

Fever for no apparent reason is a symptom of lupus and most often, people choose to ignore it and do not consider taking a doctor’s  appointment because the body temperature would not be that high. Increased frequency of getting low-grade fevers might be an indicative of lupus and in that case do not hesitate to visit a doctor.

Hair Loss

Hair loss symptoms of lupus do not actually mean hair fall but hair thinning due to the inflammation of the head and scalp and the process is relatively slow. The symptom is visible not just in the hairs on the scalp but all body hairs including eyelashes, eyebrows, and beard.

Once you start the lupus treatment, the symptom gradually reduces and the hair growth is renewed except in cases where lesions develop on the scalp.

Lesions or Skin Rashes

The most easily observable symptom of lupus is the skin rash shaped like a butterfly, which develops over the cheeks and bridge of the nose. The rashes develop soon after the exposure to sunlight or just before a flare-up and about 50% of lupus patients show this symptom.

The development of non –itchy lesions on different parts of the body is also another common symptom and lupus patients are often sensitive to sun and even artificial light.

The disease has several other symptoms and fortunately not everyone gets all of them and the old symptoms often disappear when the new ones start showing up.
